The Koi people evolved from the garden goddess series. The nocturnal dreams, Julia experienced, of dancing, nature patterned figures continued from earth to water; dreams of brilliantly colored Koi People swimming with realistic Koi fish. Even though originating in an imagined reality, Julia's work is grounded in nature and observation. Julia researched and photographed Koi in public gardens and koi ponds to add clarity to the dream image. The movement and curves of their bodies provide rhythm to the paintings. Gray paints multiple layers of transparent oil to create depth and vibrancy in her paintings.
