Both of these species are California natives. Their habitats overlap in Northern California, from the coast to the mountains. The Cobra Lily Darlingtonia californica is the only carnivorous plant native to California. It needs the cool waters of mountain streams to keep its roots moist. The Cobra lily traps invertebrates of all kinds, from beetles to flying insects to cockroaches, grasshoppers and small snails. The California Newt Taricha torosa excretes a neurotoxin through its warty skin and can cause paralysis and or death to a predator. Thank you to Cait Hutnik, Barry Rice and Al Hitchens
for the use of the photographic images, which I used for reference in painting
theses species. Their websites are available here.
