Golden Toad Bufo periglenes were last witnessed at Monteverde, Costa Rica in 1989. The male of the species is a bright golden yellow, the female is olive with bright red and black spots. In 1987 1,5oo toads gathered in breeding pools. In 1988 and again 1989 only one single male appeared in the ponds. None have been sited since.
