California Red-legged Frog
Rana aurora draytonii Made famous by Mark Twain's story, "The
Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", is listed as a
Threatened species. At 5 1/4" it is the largest native frog west of
the Sierras. In the 1800's it became a fashionable food in San
Francisco restaurants. When the populations were diminished, bullfrogs
were imported from the east. The Red-legged Frog's existence is
threatened by these very bullfrogs which eat them, and by habitat loss
from sprawl, logging, chemical spraying, and irrigation.
